Big Picture Marketing - Creating a Vision-Driven Marketing Plan
Every good marketing strategy starts with a Vision. Welcome to the first chapter in our series where we’re breaking down our Marketing Checklist into digestible, actionable parts.
The Importance of Goals and Vision in Marketing
If you’ve ever wondered how to get more out of your marketing, it’s crucial to define what success looks like for you and your business. That success is driven by clear goals and a compelling vision. They act as your North Star, guiding your strategies and ensuring every marketing effort pushes you closer to your aspirations.
Step 1 – Define a Clear Vision
Imagine where you want your business to be in 3 to 5 years. This is your vision—a snapshot of the future where your business has achieved its fullest potential. Consider the impact you want to have and the legacy you wish to create.
Dive deep into the specifics: the lifestyle you have, the team size you’re envisioning, the awards you won. Are you steering the ship full time, or have you structured things to afford you the freedom of part-time involvement? What do your revenue numbers look like, and what milestones have you surpassed? The more details, the better. These vivid descriptions aren’t just dreams; they are the blueprints of your success.
Write it all down with as much richness and precision as possible, and let this vision guide your every business decision.
Step 2 – Break Down Your Vision into a Yearly Plan
Take that detailed vision and distill it into a tangible 1-year marketing plan. Consider the essential goals this year that will propel you closer to your 3-to-5-year vision.
What do you want to have achieved by this time next year? Set milestones that will serve as checkpoints on your journey, marking your progress toward that dream. Remember, this step isn’t about the nitty-gritty of how you’ll accomplish these goals. Instead, it’s about establishing clear, achievable objectives for this year. Think about the key achievements that will build the foundation of your long-term success and lay them out as your goals for the coming 12 months.
Step 3 – Select the Right Marketing Activities
Now, it’s time to talk strategy. Decide on the marketing strategies that align with your yearly goals. What’s your overarching plan to achieve your marketing objectives for the year? Will you enhance your digital presence, or perhaps focus on increasing your community engagement?
Select actions that resonate with your audience and align with your brand values. Then, break down these strategies into actionable steps: what will you do month by month to steadily move towards your goals?
This step is about connecting your annual objectives with tangible monthly tasks, ensuring a coherent strategy that guides you through the year.
Step 4 – Get Down to Daily Actions
What does your month, week, or even today look like in terms of marketing actions? Aim for specificity and realism in these daily endeavors.
To ensure coherence with your overarching marketing strategy (outlined in step 3), I suggest setting well-defined weekly or daily goals. I recommend limiting yourself to a maximum of 3 goals at a time, as it has been proven that setting more than 3 goals can paradoxically lead to achieving less.
These focused goals should act as the building blocks that incrementally construct your path to success.
Step 5 – Keep Yourself Accountable
Set up regular check-ins for your goals and vision. Whether it’s a weekly review or a monthly audit, these checkpoints are vital for staying on course and adapting to any changes along the way.
Conclusion:
Crafting a marketing strategy should be deliberate, starting from a well-defined vision to detailed, actionable steps. By adhering to this guide, you’re not just making purposeful strides but also ensuring a steady advance towards your grand business goals.
