Debunking 9 Social Media Myths for Small Business Owners
Social media is an essential part of any business’s marketing strategy. But with so many myths and misconceptions circulating, it can be difficult to know what strategies are most effective for your business. To help you separate the truth from the fiction, we’re going to debunk 9 of the most common social media myths.
Myth 1: You Have to Boost Your Post to Get Exposure: False!
While boosting posts can be a great way to reach a larger audience, it’s not the only way. A good organic strategy, such as creating high-quality content and engaging with your followers can also get you exposure without spending money. Plus, organic methods allow you to build relationships with your customers while gaining valuable insights into their interests and preferences.
Myth 2: You Have to Be on All Platforms: False!
Not all platforms will be right for your business or target audience; some may even be a waste of time and resources. It’s important to focus on the platforms that make sense for your company—whether that means being active on just one platform or some of the major ones. Also keep in mind that creating a presence on social networks is only half the battle—you need to actively engage with users and create content tailored specifically for each platform in order to get results.
Myth 3: You Have To Do It All On Your Own: False!
Even if you have a personal brand or small business where you’re basically doing it all yourself, you don’t actually have to do it all solo. Outsourcing some tasks can free up time and energy so you can focus on other areas of your business while still keeping up with current trends in social media marketing.
Myth 4: You Have To Have Thousands Of Followers To Be Successful: False!
Having thousands of followers doesn’t necessarily mean success. Quality trumps quantity when it comes to followers—engaged users who interact with your content regularly are more valuable than those who simply follow. Additionally, if you want more followers (and more engagement!), focus less on follower count and more on creating high-quality content that resonates with your target audience.
Myth 5: My Customers Aren’t On Social Media: False!
Chances are most of your potential customers are using at least 1 social media platform, wether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Tiktok, LinkedIn or the next new platform—even if they aren’t active every day, they still have accounts which means they could potentially see your posts if they pop up in their newsfeeds or search engine results pages.
Myth 6 – You should only post during the work week: False!
While it’s true that some people may spend less time on their phones over the weekend, others remain just as active on social media during their free time. Additionally, there tends to be less competition on social media platforms over the weekend, as fewer people are posting. Depending on your target market, scheduling social media posts for the weekend when people have more downtime can actually be a smart strategy. However, it’s important to identify when the majority of your audience is online, as this can vary depending on your industry and target audience. A skilled social media manager can help you analyze your audience’s behavior and optimize your social media posting schedule to maximize engagement and reach.
Myth 7: It’s All About the Number of Followers
The common belief that success on social media is solely determined by the number of followers is a pervasive myth that can mislead small business owners into prioritising quantity over quality. In reality, the power of social media lies in cultivating an engaged and targeted audience that resonates with your brand and its message.
An account with fewer, but highly interactive followers, can yield far greater results in terms of customer loyalty, brand advocacy, and conversion rates than one with a large, disengaged audience. It’s about attracting the right people who genuinely care about your content, products, or services, and are more likely to engage with your posts and, ultimately, support your business.
Myth 8: Social Media Is Only for the Young
The belief that social media caters only to the young dismisses the broad spectrum of ages actively engaged on these platforms. Older demographics are not only present but are also interacting meaningfully with content and brands. For small business owners, this means there’s potential to reach a wider audience by tailoring content for diverse age groups. Recognising platform preferences across generations—from Facebook’s appeal to older users to Instagram and TikTok’s younger audiences—enables businesses to craft more inclusive and effective social media strategies, debunking the myth and broadening their market reach.
Myth 9: Social Media Results Are Immediate
The myth of instant success on social media often leads to unrealistic expectations. In truth, establishing a solid presence and fostering meaningful connections takes time and consistent effort. Success in this arena is a gradual process, involving the strategic creation and sharing of content that resonates with your audience. Patience and persistence are key, as building a loyal community and achieving tangible business outcomes through social media are long-term endeavors, not overnight achievements.
Social media isn’t something businesses should ignore—it’s an essential part of any modern marketing strategy. But there are plenty of misconceptions about how best to use these platforms for maximum impact which is why we debunked seven popular myths about social media above. We hope this helps clear things up and gives business owners the confidence they need when embarking on their next social media campaign!
